Dacia Spring returns to European production at €17,900

Europe's affordable electric vehicle race is becoming a manufacturing race. Renault Group is moving production of the redesigned Dacia Spring to Novo Mesto in Slovenia, with French orders starting at €17,900 for the Expression version.

The compact EV is expected to offer up to about 250 km of range, depending on specification and test conditions. It is designed primarily around urban mobility rather than long-distance touring.

Why €17,900 matters

Electric vehicles have often carried a significant price premium because of battery cost and advanced electronics. The Spring takes the opposite approach: compact dimensions, a smaller battery and a focus on practical city use.

A lower starting price matters because mainstream buyers are highly sensitive to upfront cost.

European production is part of the story

The new Spring is being built in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. That brings production closer to European customers and gives Renault Group a locally produced product for a market increasingly concerned about the competitiveness of imported EVs.

A fast development cycle

The new model has been developed on an accelerated timeline and shares architecture with the next Renault Twingo program. Platform sharing reduces the need to develop every system from scratch.

That is particularly useful in the affordable segment, where engineering cost has to be tightly controlled.

Range is being traded for affordability

The Spring's reported range of up to about 250 km is not aimed at buyers who regularly drive long distances. It is aimed at drivers whose daily travel is shorter and predictable.

A smaller battery can reduce weight and cost. It can also make the vehicle more efficient in city conditions.

The Chinese EV challenge

European automakers are under pressure from Chinese manufacturers that can produce competitive EVs at aggressive prices. A sub-€20,000 European-built EV gives Renault Group a way to compete closer to that price territory.

But European production remains expensive. Labor, energy, compliance and supply-chain costs all matter.

What this means for African markets

The Spring is interesting to African readers because affordable EVs are needed for broader adoption. But a European price does not automatically become a Kenyan or African retail price. Shipping, duties, taxes, financing and distribution can change the final cost substantially.
