Sony PS5 update makes Enhanced PSSR the default on PS5 Pro

Sony's latest PlayStation 5 system update makes one of the PS5 Pro's most important image technologies easier to use. System software 26.06-14.00.00 enables Enhance PSSR Image Quality by default on PS5 Pro.

The update also adds an optional voice-chat speaker indicator, Community Activity features in the Welcome Hub and Bluetooth behavior changes relevant to some organized gaming environments.

What PSSR does

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, is Sony's machine-learning image reconstruction technology. It is designed to improve the perceived quality of a rendered image without requiring every output pixel to be generated natively.

What changed

The important change is the default setting. After the update, Enhanced PSSR Image Quality is enabled automatically on PS5 Pro. It can apply enhanced PSSR to supported games that previously used an earlier PSSR implementation.

This does not mean every PS5 game suddenly receives PSSR. Compatibility still depends on the game and its rendering support.

Why Sony is doing this

The PS5 Pro is a premium console. Its value depends partly on visible improvements rather than only on hardware specifications.

Software such as PSSR helps Sony demonstrate what the additional processing capability can do. Making the enhanced setting automatic also reduces the chance that owners never discover it.

Voice chat gets a useful improvement

The update adds an optional speaker indicator so players can see who is speaking in a voice chat. It is a small interface change, but useful in busy party conversations.

The Welcome Hub adds community activity

Sony is also adding Community Activity features that can surface multiplayer trends and regional activity. It gives players another way to discover what other users are playing.

Bluetooth and esports

The firmware also changes Bluetooth behavior in certain regions, with organized gaming environments such as esports venues in mind. Most home users may never notice this.

This is not a dramatic PS5 redesign. It is a refinement that makes Sony's machine-learning image reconstruction technology more automatic on its premium hardware.

The broader lesson is that modern consoles increasingly evolve through software. Hardware remains fixed, but reconstruction models, interface features and system capabilities can improve after launch.
