iPhone Duo vs Xiaomi 18 Fold: Why the Timeline, Not the Design, Is the Real Story

Two new foldable phones launched days apart in early September, and the resemblance was immediate enough that tech commentators and social media users noticed within hours. Apple's iPhone Duo debuted on September 9. Xiaomi's 18 Fold beat it to market by 48 hours, officially launching in China on September 7, after having been shown behind glass at IFA a few days earlier.

That ordering matters more than it might seem. Xiaomi was not reacting to Apple's finished, announced device. It was reacting to the same thing the rest of the internet had been looking at for months: increasingly detailed leaked renders of Apple's foldable, which by late August had converged on a wide, roughly square, passport style form factor with rounded corners in both the open and closed positions.

What Xiaomi actually built toward

Xiaomi has a well documented history of designing in conversation with Apple's aesthetic language. Founder Lei Jun has spoken openly about Steve Jobs as a formative influence on how Xiaomi builds and presents products, and Xiaomi's phones, packaging, and keynote staging have drawn comparisons to Apple's for over a decade. That context matters for reading the 18 Fold's design, since building toward familiar Apple silhouettes is a long running, if debated, part of Xiaomi's product strategy, not a one off response to this specific device.

By the time Apple's rumored dimensions and corner geometry had solidified in leak coverage in late August, several outlets noted that Xiaomi's own foldable renders looked close enough to be mistaken for early Apple mockups. That resemblance was visible and discussed before Apple had shown anyone outside the company its actual hardware.

What's genuinely similar, and what isn't

Both phones land in the same broad category: a passport style, wide book fold with outer and inner displays in a similar size range. The iPhone Duo's outer display is 5.4 inches to the 18 Fold's roughly comparable outer panel, and their inner displays are close, 7.6 inches for the Duo against 7.58 inches for the 18 Fold.

The engineering underneath diverges more than the silhouette suggests. Apple uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover with more than 100 components and a 3D printed titanium cover, plus Ceramic Shield 2 glass on front and Ceramic Shield on the back, with an IP68 rating. Xiaomi uses a 7000 series aluminum alloy frame, its own Xiaomi Shield Glass 3.0, and a distinct three link hinge design the company calls Dragon Bone, which it says went through more than 10,000 simulated drop angle tests and carries a 1.2 meter drop rating Apple has not published an equivalent figure for.

The weight difference is the most tangible real world distinction: the Duo weighs 254 grams to the 18 Fold's 219 grams, a 35 gram gap that traces directly to titanium versus aluminum construction, not to copied engineering.

Xiaomi also undercuts Apple meaningfully on price and wins on a few individual specs, a larger 6,000mAh battery, faster 67W wired charging, and a 200MP Leica branded camera system, while the 18 Fold remains limited to China for now and ships on Xiaomi's HyperOS China build without Google services out of the box.

The tecMAMBO take

"Xiaomi copied Apple" is a satisfying headline and a misleading one. What actually happened is closer to convergent design under a shared set of rumors: Apple's leak trail had become detailed and consistent enough by late August that any manufacturer designing toward the same passport style category was always going to land somewhere visually adjacent to what eventually shipped. Xiaomi leaned into that resemblance rather than away from it, consistent with a strategy the company has run for years, and got a device to market first as a result.

That is a legitimate strategic and design story. It is not evidence of stolen schematics or compromised supply chains, and treating a visual family resemblance between two foldables, launched two days apart, built on fundamentally different hinge architectures and frame materials, as proof of industrial espionage would be a serious, unsupported accusation against a real company. The more interesting and better supported story is the one about timing and design philosophy, not theft.
