iOS 27 is here, and the headline feature isn't the update, it's the AI assistant Apple rebuilt with Google's help

Apple's fall software update arrived on schedule this year, rolling out to compatible iPhones on Monday, September 14, after an eight-build beta cycle that began at WWDC in June. iOS 27 supports the same hardware floor as iOS 26, reaching back to the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE. That's the easy part of the story. What actually changes on your phone depends heavily on which iPhone you have and where you live.

The real headline: Siri finally got the rebuild it's needed for years

Apple has talked about overhauling Siri for years without shipping something that matched the pace of competitors. iOS 27 is the release where that finally happens, and the scale of the change is bigger than a typical yearly refresh.

Siri AI now runs as its own dedicated app, rather than existing as a background utility layered under the old assistant, and it can be invoked by pulling down from the Dynamic Island on the Home Screen. It adds text input alongside voice, conversation history, follow-up questions, and broader access to personal context across your device. Visual Intelligence, the ability to point your camera at something and ask Siri about it, is now available through a dedicated Siri mode inside the Camera app, and you can include screenshots and captured images directly as context for a query.

The part of this that will likely draw the most scrutiny: Apple built the new Siri AI using Google's Gemini models as part of the underlying technology, alongside Apple's own next-generation Apple Foundation Models, which run both on-device and in the cloud through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Apple has spent years positioning its AI strategy as more privacy-forward and independent than competitors relying on external cloud AI providers. Building the biggest AI feature of the year in partnership with Google, its search-engine antitrust rival in an unrelated but very live legal fight, is a notable departure from that framing, even if the privacy architecture around Private Cloud Compute stays intact.

Not everyone gets the same Siri AI on day one

This is the detail buried furthest from most headlines, and it matters most for anyone deciding whether iOS 27 is worth installing immediately.

Siri AI is not available in the EU on iPhone or iPad at launch, due to regulatory constraints tied to the region's digital and AI governance rules. Apple hasn't given a firm date for EU availability.

Separately, the deepest, most capable version of Siri AI is tied to hardware: it requires a chip no older than the A17 Pro, which effectively means iPhone 15 Pro and newer get the fuller experience, while iPhone 15, 14, and 11 through 13-series devices can install iOS 27 and its general performance and interface improvements, but not the complete Siri AI feature set. Apple's own compatibility guidance gives no indication that base iOS 27 performance is degraded on older hardware to make room for features it can't run, so installing is still worthwhile on an older iPhone for the app-launch speed, Photos and Camera loading, and AirDrop transfer improvements Apple has described, alongside new parental control tools, even without Siri AI itself. Apple has described these performance gains only in general terms in its own materials; specific percentage figures circulating in some early coverage have not been independently verified against an official Apple benchmark disclosure, and should be treated cautiously until Apple publishes exact numbers or independent testing confirms them.

Put together, that's a real three-tier split: full Siri AI on newer hardware outside the EU, iOS 27 without the deepest Siri AI on older hardware, and iOS 27 without any Siri AI in the EU regardless of hardware, at least for now.

What else changed

Liquid Glass, Apple's interface design language introduced with iOS 26, gets readability refinements and a new slider in Settings that lets users adjust the effect's transparency from ultra-clear to fully tinted, a direct response to complaints that the original implementation hurt legibility in some contexts.

Photos gains an Extend tool for generating content beyond an image's original frame and a Spatial Reframe feature for adjusting perspective. Spotlight, Photos, and Mail search results are described as more relevant and comprehensive. Connectivity Assist is designed to make transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular networks smoother. CarPlay picks up larger, more interactive content thumbnails and the updated Liquid Glass icon treatment for apps like Maps and Weather, plus what Apple describes as more reliable wireless CarPlay connections and improved GPS accuracy. Smaller additions include custom EQ for AirPods, perimenopause and menopause support inside Cycle Tracking in the Health app, and independent volume controls for alarms and timers separate from media volume.

The tecMAMBO take

Most yearly iOS updates are genuinely incremental, and describing one as a "must install" is usually marketing language more than reporting. iOS 27 is a partial exception, not because of the interface tweaks, but because Siri AI represents Apple finally closing a multi-year credibility gap in AI assistants, at the cost of a partnership with Google that complicates the privacy-first narrative Apple has built its AI positioning around.

The more interesting long-term question isn't whether Siri AI is good on day one. It's whether Apple's decision to gate the fullest version behind both hardware and geography, intentionally or not, creates a two-speed user base heading into 2027: iPhone owners with new enough hardware in markets without EU-style AI regulation getting Apple's actual flagship AI experience, and everyone else getting a materially different phone running the same OS version number.
