A new R100m seed fund targets South Africa's startup gap

Aions Seed Fund I is aimed at the awkward stage where a startup has evidence, but not yet the scale investors want.

Aions Ventures has launched Aions Seed Fund I, a R100 million fund aimed at early-stage South African technology startups.

The fund combines money from the High Impact Seed Fund of Funds and the Technology Innovation Agency, with a focus on helping local startups move from early traction toward Series A readiness.

That gap is a familiar weak spot. A company can have a working product and early customers, yet still be too early or too small for larger investors.

The fund is modest by global standards, but it is aimed at a practical bottleneck in the South African ecosystem. Alongside capital, the firm says founders will receive strategic and operational support.
